October 1996
(VERONICA (13 years old) runs from the letter box to MUM)
VERONICA: MUM! MUM! I won the Libra ‘Follow Your Dreams’ Competition!
MUM: What?
VERONICA: Someone from Libra pads and tampons came to our school and to talk about pads, tampons, periods and following your dreams. They gave us this form to fill out and we were in the draw to be in the competition and I won!
MUM: But Veronica, you don’t even have your period yet.
VERONICA: I know mum, but anyone could enter.
MUM: Yes, but do you win tampons or what?
VERONICA: No! I won $100 Sportsgirl voucher, and $100 BASS voucher. We can get tickets to Michael Jackson! He’s touring!
MUM: I don’t know sweetheart. His concerts seem pretty big.
VERONICA: It will be fine mum, please!
MUM: Ok. We’ll go to the shops tomorrow and get the tickets.
The next day at the BASS box office.
(MUM and VERONICA are standing in line.)
MUM: You know what sweetheart, I was thinking. It’s a bit cruel to just buy two tickets to Michael Jackson when we can’t take your father and your sister.
VERONICA: But she’s too young to go, and Dad hates Michael Jackson.
MUM: Still, we should see something we can all go to as a family alright.
(pause)
VERONICA: (sulking) But I really want to go mum. And we can get good seats.
MUM: I know sweetheart, but I’m too scared to go. His concerts are just so big.
VERONICA: Fine. Whatever.
MUM: (to lady at BASS ticket counter) Two adults and two children to Riverdance please.
June 25th 2009
(MUM and VERONICA (now 25 years old) watch the television. Jermaine Jackson announces his brother’s death).
VERONICA: I will never forgive you.
MUM: I know.
THE END.
