(MUM and VERONICA drive home from the Malthouse Theatre)
MUM: I really liked it!
VERONICA: Really?
MUM: Yes! It was really good.
VERONICA: I’m glad that you did.
MUM: It was something different, and something interesting.
VERONICA: Yes, I thought it was really lovely. (pause) The blonde annoyed me though.
MUM: Me too!!! Isn’t that interesting?
VERONICA: And I didn’t like the guy with the floppy hair.
MUM: Neither did I! Isn’t that funny that we both don’t like the same thing.
VERONICA: I really liked the three other girls, they were amazing.
MUM: Yes, me too. They moved so beautifully.
VERONICA: And the other curly-haired guy was great.
MUM: Yes! I thought he was very striking. His physicality was breath taking.
VERONICA: (impressed) The other guy, in the suit, he was interesting to watch too.
MUM: Mmm, yes.
VERONICA: Except I didn’t like the mask. That looked odd.
MUM: Yes, it did look a bit funny.
(silence)
MUM: Well, that was a very nice night.
VERONICA: Yes, I really enjoyed myself.
MUM: Well, happy birthday darling.
VERONICA: Thanks mum.
(pause)
MUM: (grabbing VERONICA by the arm) I didn’t buy you a cake.
VERONICA: That’s ok mum.
MUM: I’m sorry.
VERONICA: Don’t worry about it mum, it’s been a pretty hectic couple of weeks. It’s not a big deal.
MUM: I guess we could really do without a cake anyway.
VERONICA: (tactfully) I’ll remember that for your birthday next year.
(pause)
MUM: We’ll have a cake tomorrow.
(VERONICA smiles to herself.)
THE END.
